Tile & Slate Roofing in Surrey and North Hampshire
Tiles and slates cover most of the homes in Surrey and North Hampshire. Clay peg tiles, concrete tiles and natural slate all do a good job, and they can last a very long time when they're looked after. But tiles slip, crack and go missing. Slate nails rust. Mortar breaks down. Left alone, the smallest gap lets water into the loft.

Common tile and slate problems
- Slipped or missing tiles, often after strong wind

- Slates sliding out because the nails have rusted (people call this nail sickness)
- Flaking or crumbling tiles where the surface is breaking down
- Crumbling mortar under the ridge and hip tiles
- Thick moss that holds water against the roof
- Damp patches, stains or drips in the loft or ceilings

Tile roofing
We repair and replace clay tiles and concrete tiles. A small repair usually means swapping broken tiles, refixing loose ones and renewing the mortar. If a whole slope has worn out, we'll talk you through re-tiling it. Matching matters. A patch that stands out spoils the look of your home. We'll match your tiles as closely as we can, and we'll try to source reclaimed tiles where that helps.
Slate roofing
Slate is tough, but it isn't magic. The nails fail long before the stone does. When just a few slates have slipped, we can often slide new ones in and hold them with clips, without stripping the roof. When the nails are going all over, it's better to re-slate. We'll explain why. We work with natural slate and can suggest a good match for older roofs.
Repair or re-roof?
A repair is usually right when the damage is in one area and the rest of the roof is sound. It's time to think about re-roofing if repairs keep coming back, the tiles are breaking down or the timbers underneath are damaged. We'd rather you spend your money once on the right fix than pay for patches every winter. Not sure which you need? Let us look. If it does need a new roof, we can do that too.
Looking after your roof
The best thing you can do is check the roof from the ground after a storm. Binoculars help. Look for slipped tiles, gaps and lumps of mortar in the gutters. Please don't climb onto the roof yourself. It's dangerous, and walking on tiles can break them. Avoid jet-washing your tiles. It can strip the surface and force water in under them.

How much does it cost to replace a few tiles?
A small repair costs a lot less than most people expect. The price depends on how many tiles, how high the roof is and how hard it is to reach. We'll give you a fixed price once we've seen it.
Can you fix a slipped slate without a full re-roof?
Yes, in many cases. We can fit a replacement slate with a clip or a strip of lead. If the nails have gone across the whole roof, we'll tell you a repair won't last.
How long do roof tiles last?
It varies. Concrete tiles often last 40 to 60 years. Clay and good natural slate can last much longer, sometimes 100 years or more. Age isn't everything. The fixings, the underlay and how the roof is looked after matter just as much.
Do you use reclaimed tiles?
Where it helps the match, we'll try to. Reclaimed tiles can suit older roofs well. If we can't find a good match, we'll say so and talk through the options.
